Walk Steps
-
Begin your walk at the charming Church of St. Michael the Archangel in Shalfleet
— you can catch the no. 7 bus here between Ryde and Freshwater. If you're driving, there’s a handy car park just up Mill Road.
With the church in front of you, turn right along the A3054 and stroll past the lovely Shalfleet House. - Take a right turn up the clearly signposted Coastal Footpath S11 towards Lower Hamstead. You’ll walk beside a hedge on your right, then cross a footbridge. After that, bear right and enjoy the woodland path until you reach a signpost.
- Turn right again onto the wide track marked Coastal Footpath (S27) to Lower Hamstead. You’ll cross a scenic bridge between Ningwood Lake and Western Haven. Ignore the tracks leading to Pigeon Coo Farm on your left. Keep an eye out for a turnoff to the right (signposted S28) — you’ll be coming back this way later. For now, carry on towards Hamstead Farm, and take a moment to admire the view on your right (even if you skip the stile!).
- When you see another stile on your left, just keep going straight. Continue past Hamstead Farm on your right (along the Coastal Footpath S3). Head down to the beach — the sea will be on your left — and you’ll pass a memorial on your right.
- When you reach a signpost, head right up the steps and over a stile. Follow the path straight ahead to a long footbridge. Cross it, then veer left as the waymarkers indicate, and go over the stile in the hedge. Turn right and walk alongside the hedge until you reach an inlet. Bear right over another stile and follow the path as it curves around the inlet, which will now be on your left. Once you’ve crossed one final stile into a field, keep the hedge on your left until you reach a stile that leads to a track. Turn right here and follow the track back to the Coastal Footpath sign you passed earlier.
From there, just turn left and follow the path back to Shalfleet.
